Steven Knight, Writer of James Bond 26: Britons Shouldn’t “Celebrate Division” Like America; Celebrate “Artistic Nationalism” Instead

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Steven Knight, creator of Peaky Blinders and screenwriter of the 26th James Bond installment, told The Times that people in Britain should celebrate “artistic nationalism” rather than “honoring division.”

The 66-year-old writer believes that this negative discourse has been imported from America: “Being British has always meant having a sense of humor, tolerance, and perseverance—not celebrating division. I don’t like this kind of rhetoric that says, ‘They’re terrible, I hate liberal elites.’”

Knight argues that instead, Britons should celebrate “artistic nationalism”: “Artistic nationalism is something I fully support. We cannot allow ourselves to pretend we’re like everyone else. We’re not. We should be ourselves. We should raise the flag of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Crown, and our extraordinary actors.”

The 26th James Bond film will be directed by Denis Villeneuve, known for Dune, though the new actor for the franchise has not yet been announced. This sequel will be the first produced without the franchise’s longtime producers and under Amazon MGM Studios. It was previously confirmed that Amy Pascal and David Heyman will serve as the new producers of James Bond, succeeding Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.

Knight will also debut his series House of Guinness on Netflix on September 25. He has recently completed filming the Peaky Blinders feature film starring Cillian Murphy.
